Week One Reflection
I think we had a really great first class tonight! It was nice seeing some familiar names... I think I had a lot of you in the teaching science class with Tonya Heavin. Virtual classes aren't my favorite, but it is easier when you know a little bit about your peers. ๐
I'm really excited to learn more about teaching language arts through this class. Language Arts was always my favorite subject as a student, so I really want to learn how to captivate my future elementary students and make them fall in love with it too. Not to mention how incredibly important reading and writing is to a person's future (no pressure to us teachers! ๐
).
We went over A LOT of information tonight and I feel a little overwhelmed thinking about all the assignments that we have over these next (short) 8 weeks. I typically always feel like that on the first day of a new class though. Some people tend to procrastinate and stress in the last few weeks of a class, but I usually always stress the most at the beginning of a class. When I get used to the schedule and more familiar with assignments I tend to mellow out. ๐ Same thing happened with this blog situation - I've never used Blogger or have even thought about blogging, so I kinda freaked at first. Now, however, I feel more comfortable and I actually think I might enjoy this.
Here's some thoughts and questions I'm having about our assignments:
- I've only done one other scope and sequence before, so I appreciate the template Dr. Steffes gave us. I think I put too much detail in my last one. How many times have you created a scope and sequence? Does it get easier the more you do it?
- I really want to teach first grade, but will obviously be certified 1-6 and will be fine with teaching any grade. Any time I have to do a unit plan as an assignment though, I always stick to first grade. Do you think I should broaden my horizons and do this unit plan on a different grade?
P.S. Here's a visual of how we all looked as Dr. Steffes explained the upcoming assignments to us tonight. ๐ HAVE NO FEAR... WE'LL FIGURE IT OUT.

I love you picture so fitting! I feel the same as you thenfirst night I get so stressed and overwhelmed the information and what is due and when I freak myself out. But then I tell myself to calm down I have done this for 4 years I am almost done so keep going and I calm down and I do great lol! I think we will do great and learn a lot from this unit plan. So to answer your questions I have only done one other scope and sequence like you in science. I felt like I didn't really do to little or too much for it so I am going to kind of do the same for this class. We just have to remember it is. Just an overview so don't get too too detailed. Also I am the same way as you! I will be certified in 1-6 but I want 1st so I do a lot of my lessons in that grade level and I have changed my grade level and subjects some. Last session I did a verity. But this unit plan I am sticking with first because I will be student teaching in first and I might use it sometime during that! Can't wait to blog with you more !
ReplyDeleteI always have more trouble at the beginning of class too. It is overwhelming until you get in that routine and know what to expect and what the teacher wants from you. This is also my first time blogging but you seem to have it figured out. I tried to add the smiley face and couldn't figure it out. As for scope and sequence, this will be my first one and I am nervous. Will definitely need to do research. I would think it would get easier with time once we know what we are doing I would think we would become more comfortable with them. Unless if first grade is the only grade you are willing to teach then I would broaden your horizons to include other grade levels. I teach a classroom of two year olds now and was asked a couple of years ago to take over a Sunday school class with first through third graders in it and I thought I wouldn't like it because I had my heart set on teaching kindergarten. Now however, I learned that I love the second and third grade levels and I don't mind the first. While with the younger ones you are teaching them more of their firsts and with the older students they have the basis and you are broadening on what they already know so that their knowledge on the subject grows. Its awesome!
ReplyDeleteI can't figure out how to post the picture I told you I would in here I will post it to my blog next week or later this week or email me and I will send it to you :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'll try to remind you next week :)
DeletePaige!....I remember you from Tonya Heavin's Science class! So nice to have you in another class. I love your picture! I feel like that so many times but know it will be okay and we will get through this. I did a scope and sequence once and I, too, put a lot of detail in it. I like the example one Mrs. Steffes's sent to us and will follow that format this time. I think you should broaden your horizons and choose a different grade. I used to always pick second grade for everything and found I was starting to repeat things. If you want to grow as a future educator I would pick a different grade. :)
ReplyDeletePaige, I love that picture you posted. It is so accurate, well at least of me after day one. Now that I recall, I think we were in several classes. One with Dr. Clevenger right? I do have to say that I did enjoy teaching language arts when student teaching. I loved teaching reading and writing, and I had students below average in writing. As far as your unit plan, I would try a different grade level. You may find out you like other grades. :)
ReplyDeleteYes! I think we had a couple with Dr. Clevenger and then maybe statistics together? I can't remember exactly...
