Fiction & Nonfiction Unit Book List
Third Grade
1. Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett
![]() |
| I would use this book as part of my fiction lessons. It has excellent examples of imagery but yet is short enough to use as an example in class (can be read out loud) |
2. One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate
3. The Wall by Eve Bunting
![]() |
| Another example of historical fiction. I think a lot of boys would like this book and since the movie came out not too long ago I think they could relate to it. |
![]() |
| Super cute science fiction book. It is about the metamorphasis of a butterfly - but also of how Velma transforms from a timid student to a confident scientist. |
![]() |
| I'd use this for my poetry lesson. Students so easily write off poetry as being boring - but this shows the fun side of it. |
![]() |
| Love this as an example of a biography because students will be so familiar with Disney stuff AND it is a bonus that he's from Missouri! |
![]() |
| A cute example of an autobiography. It is about an author that students this age should be familiar of! Or can at least check out his work after they read this! |
9. How People Learned to Fly by Fran Hodgkins
![]() |
| An interesting nonfiction book that students might not pick up on their own, but answers a lot of curious questions that I'm sure they have thought about at some point. |

Once I Laughed my Socks Off sounds like a good one! I own The One and Only Ivan but haven't read it yet. I am going to though! I would want to read Who Was Walt Disney because I love Disney and would want to know more about him. I already have my books for my unit but love your selections! Great choices!!
ReplyDeleteI will have to get the book cloudy with a chance of meatballs, my granddaughter has watched the movie over and over again. I have actually only heard of the One and Only Ivan and that was just when looking up things for my unit plan. I love books and enjoy reading them even the ones for younger students. I did not really find the blog post helpful for my unit as mine is on short stories but I did enjoy doing the blog. Was this blog post helpful for you?
ReplyDeleteI love The One and Only Ivan. We had to read it for a class and it was a great read. I think it helped us see different books we might use during our lessons.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read The Wall but I want to. What a fantastic list.
ReplyDeleteI have only read (that I remember) 2 books from your list! Cloudy with a chance of meatballs is prob one of my favorite books with imagery. I can't believe that I forgot about that book because I my books I have related to imagery and figurative language.
